The Trial of Captain Kidd

The Trial of Captain Kidd

edited by Graham Brooks with a special introduction by Alan Dershowitz

Original price was: $79.95.Current price is: $69.95.

On May 8, 1701, the curious parties gathered at the Old-Bailey for what was to be the trial for “Murder and Piracy upon the High Seas” of the infamous Captain Kidd. Over the next few days, the jury would hear the case of Mr. William Kidd, be presented with his “not guilty” defense, and survey the evidence. This is a classic case of English common law, from which the American legal system draws its roots. It would end in his hanging and the display of his corpse so every passerby would be aware of the severity of the offense of piracy. The Trial of Captain Kidd is the real-life embodiment of the excitement in your favorite childhood pirate stories, interwoven through a somber example of what happens to those who act as if they are excepted from the laws of their community.  Follow the timeless tale through the voice of each character in this famous case!

“William Kidd, hold up thy hand.”

The gripping, atmospheric true story of the “duel to end all duels” in medieval France: a trial by combat pitting a knight against a squire accused of violating the knight’s beautiful young wife. When Jean de Carrouges, a Norman knight, returns from combat in Scotland to find his wife, Marguerite, accusing Jacques LeGris, her husband’s old friend and fellow courtier, of brutally raping her, the knight takes his cause before the teenage King Charles VI. Amid LeGris’s vociferous claims of innocence and doubts about the now pregnant Marguerite’s charges (and about the paternity of her child), the deadlocked court decrees a “trial by combat” that leaves her fate, too, in the balance. For if her husband and champion loses the duel, she will be put to death as a false accuser.

These are the trials that arguably changed the course of English history and subsequently redefined the course of Western Civilization. These trials led to England’s permanent break with the Catholic Church and contributed to the success of the Protestant Reformation. The marriages, divorces, annulments, and beheadings that were central to the notorious life of King Henry VIII, the subject of this book, may represent the nadir of this medieval institution. Henry’s first marriage alone generated three trials, all of which were essentially ecclesiastic. Because marriage was regarded by the church as eternal and divine, the ecclesiastic laws regarding the validity of marriage were crucial. The Church could not give religious sanction to Henry’s actions and Henry refused to bend his will to the Pope.  The result, while servicing the whims of a great historical villian, unleashed forces in England that set it on a path towards greater freedom and prosperity. Henry’s daughter, from his second marriage, became Queen Elizabeth, who initiated what many historians believe to be a golden age in English history.

Muhammad Ali, or Cassius Clay, as he was named at birth, was the greatest fighter of his generation. He was also the most controversial. He became heavyweight champion of the world at a time when America was fighting its most controversial war—against the Vietcong—he also belonged to the most controversial religion—the Nation of Islam—and initially aligned himself with its controversial leader Elijah Mohammad. This combination led to one of the most contentious cases in modern history: The criminal prosecution against Muhammad Ali for his refusal to be drafted in the United States Army.
