August Forel (1848-1931) was a pioneer in understanding the relationship between brain and nerve function and mental health and social life. As Forel explains: mental life, and therefore our moral life too, is an expression of our brain life. Forel begins with a dscussion of the mind, brain, and nerves in their normal condition. A section on pathology of the nervous life follows. Concluding chapters are devoted to hygiene of the mental life and of the nervous system. Forel made his material accessible both to the psychologist and to the intelligent layman, so that he may govern his life in such a way as to avoid diseases and abnormalities as far as possible for himself, his fellowmen, and his offspring, and promote the health and strngth of them all in every respect.
